On Boxing With God

“Hope is, 31 days of boxing with God. Have you ever boxed with God?”

Good morning Wild Ones!

I am currently boxing with God. In this post. Right now.

My arms are raised and my heart is tired. And I don’t feel like I’m winning.

So let’s talk about how to box with God.

1. Ask God for something so crazy that only he can do it.

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us. Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages. World without end. Amen.” Ephesians 3:20-21

Priscilla Shirer has this awesome sermon on God going beyond what we already think is beyond, which is exactly what He promised in those verses above. Want to start boxing with God? Stretch your beyond. If God is said to hold all power why are we asking for ice cream when we can ask for the whole ice cream truck. And even when we ask for the ice cream truck God is willing to give us the whole ice cream company. Be warned my friend, the struggle with boxing with God, with asking God for things only He can provide, is that when you don’t get what you asked for, you know that God did not do it.

2. Make sure your request is in His will.

And this is the confidence that we have before Him: If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we already possess what we have asked of Him.” 1 John 5:14-15

Before you go feeling all disappointed make sure your request is in His will. Because honestly, your best and biggest request out of His will cannot compare to what God has to offer in His will.

“For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.” Jeremiah 29:11-12

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

So how do you make sure your request is in His will?

Pray for His will. As you’re stepping into His purpose for you, realize that every promise in the bible is a part of His will for you. So if the bible says you are the head and not the tail, and you’ve been feeling a lot like the tail, call God out on that. If the bible says you are fearfully and wonderfully made, and you’re feeling more fearfully than wonderfully made, call God out on that. The word of God is a written representation of His will. If anything in your life does not look like His written will, know that your circumstance has to change. So bring that to God.

3. Don’t let disappointment stop you.

And the Lord thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee. But the Lord thy God shall deliver them unto thee, and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction, until they be destroyed.” Deuteronomy 7:22-23

Here’s the truth,

whenever you really trust God for something, it is soooo disappointing when God doesn’t work how you expected Him to and when you expected Him to. But here’s the thing, there is so much development that happens in the midst of our blessings. It would be a disservice to us to have those blessings in our timing rather than Gods. Last night, I told God that I needed a break from Him. Not like his protection and goodness and stuff…more like the whole relationship part. I was disappointed in God, and needed some time a part…relatively. God, once again did not grant my crazy request. And in the midst of all the ways God has been blessing me, I felt justified in declaring a break because I didn’t get what I wanted in my timing.

This morning, I got up and remembered the powerhouse of a text, Deuteronomy 7. If you haven’t read Deuteronomy 7, you are really missing out on some of the most beautiful gems hidden in scripture!

The beginning of the chapter describes how God took out 7 nations greater than the children of Israel. This was not because the Israelites were great but simply because he loved them. And then God goes on to describe all of the blessings that He planned to give the children of Israel. Finally, we get to the texts above. Right before these texts, God talks about the fact that when He takes out the nations and gives the Israelites the power to destroy them, they’ll feel inadequate because they are so small. When they do feel inadequate they should remember what God has already done and understand what God is going to do (seen in the verses above).

God may not answer your request all in one go. Know that although sometimes your request is answered little by little, the mighty destruction of your problems is always the final resolution.

4. Hold on. Start boxing with God.

“Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he had not prevailed against Jacob, the man touched the socket of Jacob’s thigh; so the socket of Jacob’s thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with the man. Then the man said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking”. But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me”. So the man said to Jacob, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob”. The man said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed.””Genesis 32:24-28

Jacob wrestled with God all night. And although he could eventually do little more than simply refuse to let go, that was really when he began boxing with God. Jacob didn’t need physical might but rather mental might to box with God. When you ask God for what you want, refuse to let go of Him until He blesses you. And He will!

My guy Jacob was really only looking for protection from his brother Esau, but God turned him into a nation that night. Y’all hear that? He was asking for protection and God turned him into a nation, one still in existence today. That’s the thing about serving a God who goes beyond our beyond. Sometimes the way He blesses doesn’t even make sense. Today I’m praying for those senseless blessings. The kind of blessings that can only come from a God who blesses beyond what is already beyond our wildest dreams. And I pray those kinds of blessing on you too!

Sending only love in your direction,
